SEAN JONES LEADS 2015 MACJO AT JALC, CUMBERLAND NEXT

Now in its seventh year, the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra (MACJO) has established itself as the premier collegiate all-star big band on the east coast. Organized by the Cumberland Jazz Society, the band members are among the finest up and coming musicians and have represented more than 30 college and university jazz programs since its inception.

The 2015 group had the privilege of performing at New York City’s Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola as part of Jazz in Lincoln Center in January under the director of internationally renowned trumpeter, conductor and composer Sean Jones, and will perform again April 10-11 at the Cumberland Ramada as part of the Annual Weekend of Jazz in Downtown Cumberland. The history of MACJO, with prior appearances at the Kennedy Center, NYC’s St. Peter’s Church, and in New Orleans, along with the high profile of this year’s guest conductor, Sean Jones landed the group their performance at Dizzy’s. Jazz at Lincoln Center is considered one of the premier jazz venues in the country and in New York City.

“The Mid-Atlantic Jazz Orchestra is one of the hardest swinging collegiate ensembles I have ever heard! Congratulations to David Kauffman and his team for providing this amazing opportunity for these talented young musicians,” commented Todd Stoll, Vice President for Education at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Undergraduate and graduate college students enrolled in an institution offering jazz instruction are eligible to try out for the orchestra. Students are nominated by an instructor at their host institution and are selected by a committee comprised of members of the Cumberland Jazz Society. Members of the 2015 MACJO represent 16 different educational institutions on the east coast including City College of New York, George Mason University, Kutztown University, Manhattan School of Music, Marshall University, Shenandoah University, Towson University, University of Massachusetts, University of Maryland, Virginia Commonwealth University, West Chester University, West Virginia Wesleyan College, Western Carolina University and Western Connecticut State University.

“In just seven years, the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra has established itself as the premier all-star collegiate big band experience on the east coast. Many of the students who have been members of the MACJO have gone on to establish themselves as sought after performers throughout the country. I’m very proud to tell people that this educational outreach started right here in Cumberland, Maryland as an initiative of our local jazz society. I’m looking forward hearing the band again at April’s weekend of Jazz in Downtown Cumberland,” added David Kauffman, coordinator of the MACJO.

The 2015 Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra with Special Guest Conductor and Performer Sean Jones along with The Sean Jones Quintet will perform at the Cumberland Ramada on Friday, April 10 beginning at 7 pm. The Sean Jones Quintet is comprised of local musicians Tom Harrison, piano; Marc Lawrence, drums; Andrew Randazzo, bass and Paul Carr, saxophone. Tickets are $20/person; $15/Friends of the Cumberland Jazz Society and are available by calling 301-724-2453 or at the door. The performance will be followed by a late night jam session at the Ramada’s Harrigan’s Lounge.

Saturday, April 11, the Cumberland Area All-Star High School Big Bands and 2015 MACJO with Guest Conductors Sean Jones, Paul Carr and David Kauffman will offer a free concert at the Cumberland Ramada beginning at 7 pm.
